Practical tips for following the IMCORE approach to planning to adapt to coastal climate change

Stakeholder commitment was the linchpin to the project's overall success. It is an element that does not belong to any particular phase of the project, but rather, is an underlying aspect throughout. Therefore, we can assume that all of the tools used during the course of the project helped to increase stakeholder commitment.

Articles and press coverage
What we did

We held press conferences and disseminated information about the IMCORE project's progress in the Gulf of Morbihan. Various articles also appeared in local and regional newspapers such as Ouest France, Le Télégramme, Le Mensuel du Golfe du Morbihan and the SIAGM journal.

Why we did it

This was carried out to raise awareness of the project, local climate change issues and to suggest successful climate change adaptation methods: scenario development, strategic management thinking and futures planning.

What we achieved A total of ten articles was published.
What we learned

Whenever possible, it is preferable to write the articles oneself and then submit the finished work to the journalists for publication. This avoids a situation where journalists may misinterpret, and, consequently, distort what has been said.

Regional conference about coastal adaptation
What we did

The results will be publically unveiled at a conference taking place on 29 September 2011 in the Gulf of Morbihan.

Why we did it

The conference has been organized to present the project results to stakeholders from the Gulf of Morbihan, and also those based further afield. It is also a springboard to discuss and raise awareness of climate change issues and to this end, there will be independent guest speakers who will bring to light the importance of combating climate change, and provide details about the climate change adaptation strategies that are being adopted elsewhere in Europe.

What we learned

The lessons learned will be published after the conference has taken place in September 2011.

Information and ownership of "climate change adaptation" themes in the various networks
What we did

Information about the work carried out during the IMCORE project was disseminated to the various national and regional networks, of which SIAGM is a member.

Why we did it

For the majority of network members, climate change adaptation is a relevant topic in terms of ICZM, land planning and biodiversity, etc.

What we achieved

A briefing was prepared. This briefing concerned all members and at times, it brought home to them just how important this issue is.

Problems we had

Due to people's already heavy caseloads, work in progress, or the pressing need to attend to other short-term priorities, it was difficult to devote a day-long meeting to this issue.

Solutions (if any)

We decided that the best way forward would be to organize an international symposium on climate change adaptation. It was hoped that this would give people enough time in advance to set aside a day in their schedules.

What we learned

Everybody claims to be interested in the issue, but very few people actually work on it. Therefore, there is a need for people to feel that they belong to a common culture, and also for concrete adaptation examples to be provided.
